MP for North Swindon Justin Tomlinson has expressed his frustration at a Daily Mirror story which says has misrepresented him.

The minister at the Department for Work and Pensions was giving evidence to a Commons select committee on the policy of capping benefits at £20,000 per household.

The Mirror reported him as saying that people could take in a lodger in order to increase their income. The paper then quoted Labour MPs and housing experts criticising him as not knowing the rules around council and other rented housing.

But Mr Tomlinson said he wasn't saying people should, or could do that - he was describing what some people had done.

He said: "I was asked why some people had come off the benefit cap if they hadn't gone into work. And the analysis from 2014 shows that some have moved, others have changed how much they pay in rent and some have taken in a lodger. I wasn't advocating what they should or shouldn't do.

"If The Mirror had wanted to have a go at me as a well-paid minister defending the benefit cap - that would have been fair game. But it's frustrating when they say I said something I didn't."
