He's used to answering searching questions as a government minister, but North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson was really put under the spotlight when he visited a Haydon Wick lunch club.

Mr Tomlinson was the guest speaker at Emmanuel Church's lunch club - the weekly event supported by Age UK invites a speaker to the club once a month, and it was the MP's turn as he spoke about his journey into politics and what it was like to be a member of parliament.

There was also a lengthy question and answer session where topics included Brexit, potholes and what the food is like in the House of Commons.

Mr Tomlinson said: “It was fantastic to join the lunch club and initiatives like this are so important to provide a social outing for the elderly relatives in our community. Everybody seemed to really enjoy it and it was so nice to meet the volunteers who help out in the kitchen.

"The work that they are doing is so important and it was great to chat to the local residents, many of whom have lived in Swindon their whole lives – one lady had lived in Rodbourne for 96 years, so it was fascinating to talk to her about how much the town had changed.”

Meanwhile, South Swindon Robert Buckland is inviting residents, schools, charities and businesses and sign up for Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day on Friday December 14.

He said: “By joining in the festive fun and donating £2 to put on a Christmas jumper, you will be helping children in some of the world’s toughest places to build a better future.

“Your jumper could help bring essential food, healthcare, education and protection to millions of children around the world who are missing out.”
