A NEW phonics class will be launching in Salisbury to prepare kids for primary school.

Sounds Right Phonics Classes for Kids is coming to Salisbury and Amesbury in January, where children aged between one and four years old can gain a head start in literacy, learning how to match letters with sounds.

Each week the children will be introduced to a different letter of the alphabet, while taking part in tasks that will equip them for reading and writing in school.

Charlie Day and Alex Burnside first launched the classes in 2016 that are available across the UK, as Alex saw “a gap in children’s knowledge as they came up to reception," where there could be a "high energy, fun class that also taught early phonics,".

She added: "The main focus of the class is fun, but there is also a reason behind why we do each exercise.”

Amy Sommerville, who will be teaching the new Salisbury and Amesbury groups, is "thrilled" to be bringing classes to the area, adding: “My eldest son has just started school and these classes would have been invaluable to him in getting the best possible start at school.

"I can’t wait to open up the world of phonics in an exciting and engaging way, whilst giving the parents the knowledge and confidence to build on these skills at home.”

The sessions will take place in Bemerton Methodist Church, Tidworth Holy Trinity Church and Amesbury Baptist Church, with the first class on January 8.
