POLICE made three arrests when they discovered a car queuing at a McDonald’s drive-thru was full of drugs.

In dramatic scenes the driver tried to speed off when officers moved in and ordered the occupants to get out. But the Mini collided with an unmarked police car and two other vehicles and police were able to arrest the three men inside.

They had started to move in on the Clubman at 5.30pm on Wednesday as it waited at the Bridgemead branch.

Det Sgt Alex Spargo, from the community tasking team, said: “The scene at the drive-thru may have been a bit upsetting for some people who may have seen what happened.”

But she explained: "I would like to assure them that this action was necessary to take a large quantity of drugs off the streets of Swindon and to arrest and interview those we believe are responsible.

"I would like to thank those that were caught up in the queue at the restaurant for their patience and understanding whilst we took control of the situation and also the manager and staff at McDonald's for their help.

A Swindon man, 27, arrested on suspicion of possessing class A and B drugs with intent to supply. He was also remanded in custody for an unrelated offence.

Two men from London were also arrested and later released under investigation. One, 27, was suspected of possessing class A and B drugs with intent to supply, dangerous driving, failing to stop, drug driving and driving without a licence.

The other, 29, was arrested on suspicion of possessing class A and B drugs with intent to supply.

Det Sgt Spargo said: "We continue to work hard to target those who supply drugs in our town and will always act swiftly and decisively as the public would have seen on Wednesday."
