VANDALS have painted the town black in Chiseldon, targeting homes and cars in an overnight attack.

People all over the village woke up on Saturday to discover their cars, houses, pavements and even road signs had been sprayed with silver and black spray paint.

The vandals managed to leave their mark on the front of Seahorses care home, on Draycott Road, scrawling profanities by the front door, which were later cleaned off.

The recreational hall car park and grass banks were also painted in a number of different colours, according to the parish council.

Houses and cars on three different roads - New Road, The Crescent, and Castle View Road - were also targeted.

A mum with four disabled children told the Adver she had moved to her sister’s home for the night because of the damage to her car and front of her house.

She was frightened the hooligans were capable of doing more serious harm to her family.

“The mobility vehicle for my son was painted, as was my bedroom window,” she said.

“I’m staying at my sister’s house because of all the trouble. My kids are vulnerable so I need to make sure they’re ok.

“Fortunately I think some people have clear CCTV showing the perpetrators so the police will undoubtedly pick them up.”

Residents said many of them had recently installed CCTV to catch any vandals in the act and hopefully deter them in the future.

One resident from The Crescent added: “I can’t see any sense in it.

“It could have given the residents in the Seahorse home an awful fright, imagine seeing someone coming up to the window and doing that. It’s got to be stopped.

“I think someone got it on CCTV. I don’t know if the police will be able anything about it, they don’t normally do anything about it. But I think it could be a local person.”

Some residents were able to clean off the paint, while others notified police who recorded the areas sprayed with paint and are investigating the incident.

A Spokeswoman for Wiltshire Police said: We are investigating a series of incidents involving graffiti in Chiseldon in which paint has been sprayed on a number of buildings, including a care home in Draycott Road, and residential addresses in New Road, The Crescent and Castle View Road.

“The incidents happened overnight on 14 – 15 December. Our enquiries remain ongoing and we would encourage anyone with information to get in touch via 101.

“Graffiti can have a really negative impact on a small community like Chiseldon and this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated.”

Swindon Borough Councillor Fionuala Foley said: "I saw the posts on Facebook and I was absolutely horrified at what's been happening.

"You just wonder why there is so much mindless vandalism, and what exactly causes it.

"Sadly over my 18 years as a councillor I have seen spates like this and I just hope that anyone that's aware has it on CCTV, and that people in the village should be more vigilant."
