A NEW homeless shelter in Swindon will offer a cooked breakfast to guests after the Big Breakfast Plus announced it will relocate to the centre on Queens Drive.

The Haven night and day shelter, which officially opened on Wednesday, is aiming to offer various support and outreach services in collaboration to give tailored support to guests to help them off the streets.

Big Breakfast Plus, which provides a free cooked breakfast and a safe environment for outreach support to work with people on the streets, has been going for 25 years. It has been based in St Lukes Church, on Broad Street, since 2005.

Big Breakfast Plus Trustee Rosemary Curtis attended the opening of The Haven on Wednesday, alongside Swindon's Mayor Junab Ali and MP for south Swindon Robert Buckland.

She said: “St Luke’s has been a wonderful home to us for the best part of 14 years.

"We’re really grateful to them but we're looking forward to being part of this multi-agency hub and working collaboratively to provide access to a wide range of support for our guests on an individual basis.”

The charity was originally forced to move to St Luke's after Swindon Borough Council cut its funding in 2005, where it was able to stay at a reduce rate.

Although the council has agreed a three year lease with the Swindon Night Shelter to use the premises on Queens Drive for free.

The Haven and Big Breakfast are both wholly reliant on their team of volunteers and regular fundraising and donations of food to keep its operations running.
