Worried villagers concerned major industrial development could be built near them are swinging into action.

The South Swindon Protection Group had its first meeting before Christmas in anticipation of plans being published by Swindon company Wasdell Group for a 'science park' to be constructed between Wanborough and south Swindon.

Those plans were lodged with Swindon Borough Council last month, showing the company, based in Blagrove, wants to build a new manufacturing and packing plants, with the option for a second building as a research and development facility as part of the 'science park'.

|The company says it needs the space as it is expanding, and the new facility could brings hundreds of jobs to the area- and that the research facilities would attract high technology, science-based companies to Swindon, boosting the area's economy.

Having had Christmas reading through the hundreds of different documents and drawings in the company's application, members of the opposition group are now calling for action.

A spokeswoman said: "This proposal is an example of how land promoters actively search out opportunities to exploit the planning system and work against local wishes at the expense of communities and their countryside.

"It makes a mockery of the planning process. Which area both in and around Swindon will fall foul of poor governance next?

"The stewardship of our countryside is vital to protect against light, traffic and noise pollution, preserve the tranquillity and character of our green spaces – to the benefit and wellbeing of everyone regardless where they live.

"Wanborough Liddington and the Ridgeway villages are a rural asset to Swindon, with their sporting clubs, pubs, horse riding, walking routes, and country shows enjoyed by many so close to hand."

Wasdell Group says the development will be largely hidden from Wanborough by the landscape and the scheme's design.

The group will meet tomorrow -Thursday - starting at 8.30pm in Wanborough village hall.
