The dream of performing at Wembley is not confined to footballers, an award-winning choir did just that, and are now looking to sign up new singers.

The Wessex Male Choir, based in Swindon, sang at the RBL Poppy Appeal before the NFL match between the Washington Redskins and Cincinnati Bengals in 2016.

On Tuesday, January 15, the choir is holding a recruitment evening to entice new choristers to their ranks at the Church of Christ the Servant, Elstree Way, Abbey Meads.

The Choir’s Co-ordinator for the event, Steve Henderson said: “I remember that only two years ago, if someone had said I’d be able to sing in such a great choir, I would have been very sceptical. However I went along and have never regretted being part of such a brilliant group of men.

"My health has improved through signing up for the choir, and after a Tuesday evening singing with choir colleagues (and going to the pub afterwards!) I always feel that it is good to be alive. We are a group of friends doing something really creative and impressive as a team. We’ve even sang on the turf, infront of 42,000 people at Wembley – I never would have thought I could have done it but it’s great!”

Fresh from their sell-out Christmas show, the choir, whose patrons include Aled Jones, are already gearing up for a packed programme of concerts including jetting off to Krakow for a week’s competition. As well as singing in the historic city the singers hope to sample the cuisine and culture of Poland.

Last year the Wessex Male Choir entered three classes at the Mid-Somerset Festival in Bath, the Male Voice Choir class, Popular/Show Song open class, Sacred Song open class. They won all three! The chamber group associated with the choir, Wessex Camerata were awarded a Distinction in the Chamber Group class.

The choir rehearses every Tuesday evening from 7.30pm at the Abbey Meads church. Wessex Male Choir was founded in September 2001 and currently has around 50 members.
