THERESA May has survived a vote of no confidence in her government.

The prime minister survived the bid to oust her government by 19 votes. 325 MPs backed May, compared to 306 who supported Labour’s motion of no confidence in the premier.

Swindon MPs backed Mrs May, whose Brexit deal suffered a landmark defeat in the House of Commons.

Robert Buckland, MP for South Swindon, said: “A clear endorsement of the government and out record on a growing economy, more jobs than ever and new investment in our NHS and a reminder than Jeremy Corbyn is not the answer.

“Now we can get on with the work of finding common ground to make progress on Brexit in the days ahead.”

North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson added: “The greatest threat to this country is Jeremy Corbyn, who would abandon our allies, weaken our security and wreck our economy with higher taxes, more debt and more waste. This was decisively defeated.

“Rightly, now Labour’s petty politics has been knocked back we can focus on seeking support to deliver a sensible, pragmatic and orderly Brexit that delivers the democratic will. Politicians of all parties need to come together with calm heads and put the national interests first.”

Following the vote, Labour's South Swindon MP candidate Sarah Church said: "This result is no surprise, just another disappointment.

"The Conservatives will always rally to save their own skin. Even those who shouted loudest against the prime minister's deal think she's fit to lead the country.

"Now it's all about the next 70 days and making sure the country comes first. I truly hope to see real consensus building and cross-party work to avoid a hard Brexit."
