A SEVERE weather emergency protocol has been triggered by the council to help rough sleepers as a blast of freezing weather sweeps in.

Temperatures are expected to be less than -1 overnight tonight and Swindon is forecast to be hit by rain in the next few days.

The borough council will provide emergency accommodation to anyone who presents themselves as rough sleepers.

SWEP policy aims to prevent deaths on the street and every council in Britain is counselled to set up this strategy if required.

SBC is currently working towards reducing the number of rough sleepers over the next three years and is consulting on the draft of a new rough sleeper reduction strategy.

People are urged to inform local authorities of anyone who is in imminent danger and requires medical attention by calling 999 or 01793 445503 or report them via Street Link, an app allowing public to inform councils of people sleeping rough.
