A MUM from Swindon is fighting to raise money for pioneering surgery to save her sons legs.

Luca Railton, 15, from Cricklade, has had more than 90 hours of surgery since the age of two after he was born with several missing bones in both legs and ankles because of a rare condition called bilateral tibial hemimelia.

When he was eight months old NHS doctors in the UK wanted to amputate his right leg but his parents fought for a second opinion and he had the first of many major life-changing operations to save his legs and quality of life.

In 2014 he travelled to America to fit metal plates but as he got older he's outgrown them and needs to return for a second procedure costing £120,000.

Teresa Railton, who recently moved to Bath with Luca, told the Adver: "We always knew it was going to be a long journey, it's going to be another tough six months ahead for us.

"It's the best chance we have got for Luca's mobility, I'm not going to give up now.

"We've got to keep going, that was our commitment to our son so he can keep his legs."

Despite his condition Luca hasn't let it get in the way of being a normal teenager, taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition.

"That's how determined he is," Teresa added, "he couldn't walk for four days."

Family friend Nick Knowles, star of DIY SOS and reality TV show I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here -where he was seen strutting around in a pair of infamous red pants - has put the pants up for auction to help Luca's cause.

Nick told the Adver: “Luca is an inspirational young man. He’s been fighting since he was born and has done most of the hard work himself.

“When I came out of the Jungle and there was a lot of discussion around my ‘budgie snugglers’ and then my friend Larry suggested doing so to help Luca walk. I could think of nothing better.”

The auction of the pants to help Luca will be on February 9.
