TWO sisters sick of dog mess on their village's streets decided to take action.

The girls are behind the appearance of plastic bottles converted into poo bag dispensers.

Annabella, eight, and Scarlett Crook, six, of Wroughton, put the recycled water bottles along with posters telling people “Don’t fling it, bag it and bin it” around the village.

More than 50 of the home-made dispensers have now been installed around in Wroughton and Royal Wootton Bassett to encourage owners to clean up after their pets.

Their mum Amy Crook said: “They hate how much dog poo is all over the village and they thought it would be good for the village.

“It was my eight-year old’s idea as she saw someone else who started it in Wootton Bassett. Sadly a few were ripped down, but my girls will be putting up more very soon.”

The initiative was launched by Debby McNeil, after she saw how unhappy people were about the problem. “I wanted to do something about it. Facebook is great for initiating change and helping the community with issues people may have.”

To support the initiative, Hailey Woodall of Hulbert and Woodall Press, printed and laminated posters displayed in each bottle.

“Emma Thomas created the Facebook page, Hailey offered to make the labels and before we knew it, we were up and running,” said Debby. “I thought it was such a great idea. I was happy to get involved by printing the labels and putting up some bottles in the area,” said Hailey.

“I live on the old St Ivel site and there are no rubbish bins or poo bins on the entire estate.”

Dog mess still is one of the most common causes of complaints to local councils.

Wiltshire councillor Allison Bucknell said: “Experience shows that is generally one or two people causing all of the problems.

“I have no evidence that there is any reduction in dog poo by using this method, however for those dog owners who find they have left a bag behind, it's certainly useful.”
