POOR parking could prevent emergency services from reaching houses on an Old Town backstreet, residents fear.

Cars parked on verges and kerbs have already been credited with at least one bin collection on Dearden Walk, Marlborough Park.

But some fear the consequences could be catastrophic if parking problems are not addressed soon.

Emma Misfud, 31, said of the parking: “They block the road. If an ambulance or fire engine came down they wouldn’t get through.”

Another man, 29, who asked not to be named, said his biggest concern was that firefighters had been unable to access one house on Dearden Walk last month: “They tried getting round the side and found someone had parked on the verge.”

Residents’ bins went uncollected for several weeks when, earlier this month, refuse trucks were unable to squeeze past parked cars. Michelle Smith, 27, said: “They park wherever they want. Our bins never get collected.”

The problem has been partly blamed on staff at Nationwide’s Wakefield House complex opposite the new development. At a meeting last year between residents, the building society and Swindon Borough Council, it was suggested that a parking permit scheme could be introduced – but homeowners say they are yet to hear about any proposals.

Elaine Davis, 70, who has lived on the estate since 2011, said: “I’ve not had anything through the door. How long does it take?”

Nadine Watts, Old Town ward councillor, said a meeting was planned for early February to discuss ways to address the parking issues: “We have to be mindful not to displace the parking problem to another nearby area. I have also been contacted by a number of residents who live in Broome Manor Land and also the Croft area, as well as local allotment holders all who are experiencing problems due to the parking. A holistic approach is key.”

If a car was blocking dropped kerbs, people could report the vehicle to Swindon Borough Council by calling 01793 463772, Coun Watts added.

Last year, Nationwide submitted a planning application to build a new car park opposite its Pipers Way base. A spokeswoman said: “As a major local employer, we are aware that parking is at a premium, however the last thing we would ever want to do is inconvenience local residents. We have a dedicated security officer presence throughout the Wakefield House car park and Marlborough Park, and we will be working with them closely to help resolve any issues.

“We are in regular contact with Swindon Borough Council to look at ways we can improve parking and have agreed with Intel to utilise some of their spaces on a monthly rolling basis to help increase the supply of car parking.”
