THE remaining half of well-loved Swindon comedy duo Dave and Amos, has died.

Dave Wilson, known as the man who loved to laugh, who was 87, had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December.

He was best known for his comedy act with friend Amos Newman.

The pair met while working at Wills cigarette factory and went on to star in 70’s talent show Opportunity Knocks.

Dave’s daughter, Sue said her father loved to perform: “They started doing panto at the Ferndale School as a double act and decided from there that they wanted to go professional.

“My dad was very driven and committed to his work, he retired after Amos died and that was only a few years ago.”

After appearing on Opportunity Knocks, the duo then went on to star in other shows such as Search for a Star, Shunters Social and 3-2-1.

Their routine consisted of holding a mandolin and a violin and discussing what they were going to play, although they would never actually get round to playing the instruments.

They also performed sketches and stand-up for the British Legion, of which they were both members, providing entertainment at dinners.

“They performed all over the world” added Sue.

“Their act took them to places like Belize and the Falklands as well as numerous clubs and seaside resorts at home.

“They were also regulars at Jethro’s Club in Cornwall for a long time, they were popular all over and would go anywhere and everywhere to perform.”

She explained Dave’s death came as a great shock: “He was always just so fit and active, always full of energy.

"He was just fun to be around, loved to sing and laugh-always so generous.

“He really was a great man and the best father anyone could ask for, it is a great loss to lose him.”

Dave died on January 21 at Cheriton Care Home and leaves daughters Sue and Laura. His wife Pat died last February.

The funeral is on Febuary 7 at Kingsdown Crematorium, at 10.30am.
