Could you slim your bin?

Today is the first day of 'Waste Free February' a month-long challenge to see if people can produce no waste at all - by recycling, re-using or composting all their waste.

That might be an ask, but the idea is to get us all thinking harder about what we do with our rubbish, and helping us cut it down.

The month is backed by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust.

Staff member Gemma Annan offers some tips on how to do it - and the first thing is a waste audit.

She said: "Prior to starting your challenge, take a good look at your rubbish; what are you throwing away?

"Continue to live your normal life, buying and disposing of your usual products and items. Keep a log book of items you place in your general waste bin. Any items placed in this bin will either end up being incinerated or in the landfill, so these items are your main target."

After a week, you should have a good idea of what you throw away, and can see what you can do to change it - which meals can be cooked from scratch to avoid packaging, or which re-usable items can be bought instead of disposables.

Advice on the challenge itself - where some people will try and produce no more than a jam jar's worth of rubbish, while others aim for no more than one black sack or bin's worth - is at www.wiltshirewildlife.org/waste-free-february
