TRIBUTES have flooded social media after it was confirmed that Swindon Town club legend Danny Williams had died, aged 94.

Williams managed Town to the greatest win in the club’s history 50 years ago when beating Arsenal 3-1 in the League Cup final in front of more than 98,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.

The day remains at the forefront of many fans’ memories – with celebrations already planned to mark the historic day when Swindon Town host Port Vale on Saturday, March 16 – the day after the 50th anniversary.

The club confirmed the news on social media this evening, and fans have already paid their respects.

One wrote: “Sad day, but a brilliant achievement from Danny Williams.”

Another added: “Condolences to Danny’s family at this sad time. He was a true gent in every sense of the word who always had time for supporters. RIP Danny, you will always be remembered.”

And: “Great man, great manager. Gave us our greatest day. RIP.”

A statement released by Swindon Town Football Club read: "Everyone at Swindon Town FC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former manager, Danny Williams.

"Danny was manager on the greatest day in our club's history - victory over Arsenal in the League Cup in 1969; the 50th anniversary of which is on 15th March."
