A PROMINENT remain campaigner in Swindon has said he fears the rise of violent far-right protesters more than he does Brexit.

The campaigner from Swindon, who wanted to remain anonymous after receiving angry letters to his address, has witnessed a rise of intimidating tactics by groups of ardent Brexiteers aligning themselves with yellow vest protestors in France.

He told the Adver: “They are being persuaded to form this militia for something that is not in their interest.

“Someone actually told me that if there’s a second referendum it’s ‘your blood on the streets’.”

“It’s almost as big a fear as Brexit. You are lucky if you can get 12 people to put leaflets through doors, people are scared."

One video posted online using the hashtag #swindonyellowvests called on members to "mobilise" if Brexit isn’t delivered on March 29.

The Twitter account also replied to James Goddard, arrested on suspicion of a public order offence after shouting abuse at pro-remain MP Anna Soubry, and released on bail, said “come to Swindon soon” and to “keep up the good work”.

A day of action has been organised calling on all "Swindon patriots" to an event this Saturday at 1.30pm. The location will be revealed tomorrow.

Assistant chief constable Gavin Williams, from Wiltshire Police, said the force was preparing for protests and warned against groups trying to cause disorder.

He said: “Where possible, police forces will always try to facilitate the right to peaceful protest, while ensuring that disruption to their local communities is kept to a minimum.

“To date, protests have been largely peaceful and we have no intelligence at this time to suggest that will change.

“Police are well trained to maintain public order and stand ready to share resource across the country at if any disorder breaks out.

“We will take proportionate action against anyone who deliberately chooses to act outside the law.”
