A COUPLE who were shocked to learn that they would need IVF treatment to conceive have found invaluable help and guidance from a Swindon support group.

Lucy and Ben joined a new infertility group at GWH after receiving bad news while trying to conceive their first child.

Lucy said:“Two years ago, Ben and I tried for a baby and nothing happened – after some tests at the hospital, we learned that I had quite a low egg reserve and needed fertility treatment. This was a big surprise – my sisters are having children, my mum had no problems, so it was a bit of a blow to find out that it wouldn’t be as easy for me, it was tough to process.

“Taking tablets didn’t work so we tried IVF, it’s all happened so quickly, like a whirlwind. I didn’t know anyone else who was going through this, I felt quite isolated and I couldn’t talk to anyone about it except for Ben and my parents.”

Ben said: “We were pretty upset and confused about the situation, and I sometimes felt ignored by the doctors. I did a lot of research so I could best support Lucy and found a support group, so we went along and it was massively helpful. I never thought I'd have to go to something like this but being told you can't conceive naturally changes your life - the first session was a bit awkward at first but we settled into it."

Lucy added: "It made us feel like we weren't alone, it's nice to be able to chat about our problems and help each other out in a really friendly group that keeps us feeling positive. It can get quite intense and emotional when you're telling your story to the others, but there's a mindfulness session at the end of each meeting so we leave feeling light and relaxed.

"Linda organises it all, she's a lovely and supportive person, I'd recommend giving this a try."

Couples counsellor Linda Clarke set the free group up in October . She said: "I have training in this area and I have a passion for helping people.

"We're still a small group of eight but I've had great feedback and we're trying to raise awareness that this help is available. One in six women in the UK experience fertility issues and it can lead to depression. Coping with anything is easier if you're with people who understand what you're going through, which is why this group exists."

The group meets on the first Monday of every month at GWH from 6pm to 8pm. Call Linda on 07708 961073
