Environmental campaigners will be in Swindon's most polluted street to highlight the need, they say, for urgent action.

Extinction Rebellion Swindon, part of a countrywide environmental protest umbrella organisation has set up a Facebook Page called Kingshill Air Quality Campaign.

That follows Swindon Borough Council announcing the road from Old Town to the west as an air quality management area- that means the levels of pollution along the road are so bad, the council is obliged to take action.

The protest group has announced a demonstration in the area between 10am and 1pm on Saturday.

More details are expected to be posted on the Facebook page @KingshillAir

The group is critical of the council's approach, particularly a passage in the authority's consultation document which says: The most sustainable answer is likely through influencing behaviour change, and through the purchasing choices of vehicle buyers."

The campaigners say: "The council is going to wait until people stop buying diesel cars. In the meantime our children will continue to breathe in illegal levels of nitrogen dioxide on their way to school."
