A SUPERMARKET shopper was shocked when she saw a pointy metal shard sticking out of her cracker.

Sally Shurmer’s teenage son Josh was about to put one of the sausage-and-bacon-flavoured snacks in his mouth, but noticed the danger just in time and brought it to his mum.

She said: “It’s lucky that he did notice, it could have caused some real damage. What if there are pieces in other packs? Someone could have got hurt, especially if a toddler had eaten one, it would have ripped their mouth up.

“I have no idea how a sharp four centimetre piece of metal ended up embedded in the biscuit. I used to work in a small bakery and we had a metal detector there to stop things like that from ever happening, this is a major supermarket so surely they must have something similar.”

Sally bought the pack of Gourmet brand Pigs In Blankets crackers from Home Bargains in Hobley Drive a week ago and was not been impressed by the response she received from the pack’s supplier Fairway GB after she reported the issue to them.

She added: “The customer service has been terrible, they haven’t apologised or anything, they just sent me an envelope to sent the food back to them but it wasn’t even the right one.

“It’s been a bit of a nightmare, it’s disgusting that this was allowed to happen.

“At first, Home Bargains didn’t really listen when I told them what had happened, though they were surprised by how sharp the metal was and did say they would look into taking the product off the shelves.

The store’s attitude changed following a call from the Adver.

Sally said: “After I went to the papers, they suddenly rang me asking for more details about the pack and its bar code and things like that so they could investigate properly.

“I’m going to be checking everything I buy very carefully from now on, just in case and I’m certainly not buying those crackers again.”

The Adver approached Home Bargains for comment.

The supermarket’s press team was unable to provide a full response before deadline but mentioned that they will be looking into it.

We also approached Fairway GB for a response to Sally’s concerns about metal ending up in food it supplied, but received no reply at all.
