CASH left by a lifelong Swindon Town fan will help finance the club's new £2.4m community facility in the shadow of the County Ground.

The grant has been handed to Swindon Town Football in the Community Trust by the Nigel Eady Trust.

Diehard Town fan Nigel died in January 2012. The farmer, who had estates in Hanney, is believed to have left around £2m to be used for the long-term benefit of the club and the community.

Now, a chunk of that fortune will help realise club bosses’ dream of a sports hub, featuring new indoor facilities and 3G pitches that can be used by community groups.

Swindon Town were remaining tight-lipped over how much money the trust had given towards the project. However, it is understood to be under £1m. The project has already received a £1m Premier League and FA grant.

A Nigel Eady Trust spokesman said: “It is now seven years since Nigel Eady passed away and, as trustees of his estate, we have been searching for suitable schemes in which to invest his legacy.

“When we were approached by Jon and Clive [of Swindon Town Football in the Community Trust] we very quickly realised that this was something which we able and delighted to be associated with.

“The trustees wish them every success with this project and we are sure the people of Swindon will be proud of the facility once it is finished.

“The trustees will continue with their work to see that the proceeds of this estate are spent in such a way that honours the wishes of the benefactor.”

Jon Holloway, head of STFIC, said: “We are extremely grateful and appreciative of the contribution from the Nigel Eady Trust.

“The significant support from the Nigel Eady Trust and its trustees has enabled us to turn our long term vision and dream into a reality.

“This legacy from a very loyal Swindon Town supporter makes this project extra special.

“We will now endeavour to do everything possible to make sure that this new community sporting facility is a fitting tribute to Nigel and a lasting legacy for the trust.”

Construction work on the new County Ground facility began last month. The project has not been without controversy, with residents and dog walkers angry at the loss of green space.
