BOROUGH councillors have put forward a cross-party motion to respond to the news Honda will close its plant by 2021.

The motion proposed by conservative councillor Dale Heenan, with support from labour councillor Jim Grant and liberal democrat councillor Stan Pajak, said: "This council notes with extreme sadness that Honda will close its Swindon factory in 2021 and agrees an all-party, borough-wide response is needed as a matter of urgency to protect the families of Honda employees, and the supply chain to the factory."

The motion called on council leader David Renard to write to the Prime Minister asking for financial support, that he produces a report on the council's long and short-term response, and that a cross-party task group be created to assess ways the council can help mitigate the impact.

The council will debate the motion at a full council meeting this Thursday.
