SWINDON will recover from the shock of the Honda plant closure but it could do with government help, says the managing director of Business West.
“Swindon has recovered in the past from economic shocks like this, indeed the GWE part of GWE Business West Ltd. was forged out of the town’s railway closures in the mid 1980’s,"said Phil Smith.
“We have witnessed the transition from the heavy engineering of British Rail to process manufacturing and lighter engineering in BMW and Honda, to technology firms such as Intel, Motorola and Lucent and even to financial services like Nationwide, which is the largest employer in Swindon.
"Given Swindon’s ease of access, flexible workforce and affordable housing it is likely that, despite this blow, the town will continue the growth and diversify its economy. "
We could nevertheless do with some government help as was provided back in 1986.”
