A PETITION calling on the government to revoke article 50 and for the UK to remain in the EU has been signed by thousands in Swindon and across the country.

In just over 24 hours the petition has been been signed by over 700000 people, about 2000 of them in Swindon alone.

The fact that the petition has gathered so much support now means that the government must give an official response and it may be given time in the house of commons for debate.

The news comes after Theresa May spoke to the nation last night from Downing Street following writing to the EU to ask for an extension to the Brexit process.

Mrs May said she was unwilling to support a longer extension than June 30 and added:

"Of this I am absolutely sure. You, the public, have had enough.

"You are tired of the infighting, tired of the political games and the arcane procedural rows, tired of MPs talking about nothing else but Brexit when you have real concerns about our children's schools, our National Health Service, knife crime.

"You want this stage of the Brexit process to be over and done with. I agree. I am on your side."

She is expected to try and put her twice defeated deal before parliament again on Monday.
