SHRIVENHAM pupils learned about the importance of ethical food practices with the Midcounties Coop as part of a Faritrade event.

Youngsters from Shrivenham Church of England school took part in a Fairtrade Treasure Hunt at their local cupermarket and enjoyed a colouring competition, then sampled Fairtrade chocolate and bananas.

Headteacher Jude Scutt said: "Going in to our local Midcounties Co-operative Food made the session engaging and memorable. The pupils immediately recognised the Fairtrade label and were really interested from the get-go. As a school, one of the best ways we can get behind initiatives like Fairtrade is by educating the minds of future generations. We’d like to say thank you to Midcounties for taking the time to deliver the workshop.”

Pupils also learned about the Fairtrade Foundation's campaign to help women in developing countries like Guatemala earn more than the average daily wage of 74p a day.

Darren Adams from the supermarket chain said: "We wanted to talk to the children about Fairtrade because we want to play our part in changing the way that people think about the food on their table and where it’s come from. By hosting educational sessions with children throughout the region we hope to inspire the next generation to ensure that producers in developing countries are receiving a fair wage for the products we love.”
