GREAT Western Railway has warned of 'major delays' this morning after a person was hit by a train.

Delays were affecting services between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads, despite the incident happening further down the network at Exeter St Davids.

The 8.44am commuter train from Swindon to London Paddington saw small delays, but other services going to the south west and between Bristol Temple Meads could be delayed further.

A spokesperson for the GWR said: "A person has been hit by a train between #ExeterStDavids and #TivertonParkway and all lines between the two stations are currently blocked. Updates to follow."

The disruption could last until 8pm this evening, affecting commuters returning home.

Great Western Railway will be affected on routes in the South West and Bristol Temple Meads and London Paddington.

National Rail Enquiries warned the incident will also affect CrossCountry trains between Plymouth / Paignton and Birmingham New Street / Manchester Piccadilly / Edinburgh / Glasgow Central.
