WHILE parenting is demanding there is "no excuse" for physically abusing a child, the NSPCC has said.

The charity's comments followed the jailing of a Swindon man for almost seven years after he admitted assaulting his baby, leaving her with injuries likened to those sustained in a car crash.

The father, 25, whose daughter's identity is protected by court order, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Following the case, a spokesman for the NSPCC in south west England said: “This is an alarming case in which a defenceless baby suffered terrible trauma at the hands of her own father, who should have been keeping her safe.

“Parenting can be demanding at times but there can be no excuse for physically abusing a child. It is important that anyone worried about a child’s wellbeing speaks out, as it could protect them from harm.”
