North End Bowls Club are holding open days this week, to attract new members.

From Tuesday, April 16 to Friday, April 19 anyone wanting to give bowling a try can come along to St Mark's Recreation Ground, Ipswich Street, SN2 1DB, between 10am and 2pm.

Those interested can attend for the whole time or drop in for a few minutes. “Just come along and have ago,” said John Pheby, Club Secretary. “Don’t worry if you know nothing about bowls, we will just start from scratch,” he added.

Founded in 1926, the 40-member-strong club plays evening matches for the local men's and ladies’ league during the week. There is also a Monday afternoon triples bowls league and friendly weekend matches. Monthly social nights are also held.

The club started this year's outdoor season last weekend, with a friendly game against South Marston's Supermarine bowls club.

“We are almost like a little social club that plays bowls, said Mr Pheby. "That is not to say we are not sporting and competitive. We’d be perfect for anyone looking to take up a sport with a social side,” he added.

Most members are aged 60 or over, but Mr Pheby emphasised the club is open to all ages and backgrounds.
