SPEEDING drivers prompted late night checks from North Swindon police.

Officers swooped on Great Western Way and the surrounding roads on Saturday night after receiving a number of calls reporting cars speeding along the major A road.

A/Sgt James Rodrigues said: "Officers from North Swindon Community Policing Team 2 attended and conducted speed checks along with general patrols of Great Western Way and the surrounding roads."

In total, three people were ticketed for speeding. A further 19 people were given "strong words of advice regarding their speed or manner of driving", police added.

On Facebook, people welcomed the crackdown. One man wrote: "About time."

However, others questioned whether it would have much impact. "Total waste of time unless you are going to prosecute them and hope the courts give heavy fines and points," one man commented.
