FEARS have been raised over the safety of children after dozens of sharp objects were left scattered in the grass at a play area.

Shredded aluminium drink cans have been found close to the facility in Middleleaze, a resident reported on Facebook.

“It could have caused a nasty injury,” said the woman, who asked not to be named. “Such a shame that some people want to cause harm to others. “

The problem has been reported to West Swindon Parish Council by South Swindon parish councillor Trish Philpot.

She told the Adver: “It is highly dangerous for the residents and it was important to report it. I had a lot of people reporting anti-social behaviour to me. It is worrying.

“I don’t know the reasons behind this anti-social behaviour, but the real danger is for children and animals; they can easily get injured by walking on a shredded can.”

Earlier this year, West Swindon Parish Council invested hundreds of thousands pounds in four play areas, including Middleleaze Park.

“There is a real litter issue in this area,” added Coun Philpot. “It’s not only cans that are found but also bottles, broken glass… It shouldn’t be there. I reported it to the West Swindon Parish Council, and they sent it to Swindon Borough Council, so hopefully they will take action.”

Another West Swindon resident claimed on Facebook: “Cans are often used for preparing drugs ready for injecting.”

Coun Philpot said: “It might be a sign of drug activity, but I really don’t know if that’s the reason.”

The parish councillor is also asking for more bins and patrolling to prevent this phenomenon from continuing. Last month, vandals caused a spate of litter bin fires in the area, with each costing about £400 to replace, Coun Suresh Gattapur said last month.

“I talked to one of the PSCOs about this growing issue and he agreed that actions are needed. More PCSO patrolling would help reduce this anti-social behaviour,” Coun Philpot said.
