A LEGO Superman and Buzz Lightyear were among the highlights of the first Tadpole Garden Village scarecrow trail.

The trail on the newly-built development aimed to attract people from Swindon and bridge the divide between it and the rest of the area.

As organiser Laura Firth, from the Tadpole Farm Academy’s PTA and the Friends of Tadpole Farm, explained to the Adver: “We wanted to do something which wasn’t just school-focused.

“We didn’t want it to be inward-looking.

"We know that Tadpole has that reputation that we don’t want anything to do with anyone else.

“I wanted to break those views. We live in a great place and we wanted to share that. People got to see what it’s like here.

“We’re part of a wider community. We’re part of Swindon, and so is the school, which attracts people from all over.”

The trail handed out maps to families who could hunt around the development, which is still under construction in parts, to find the 30 handcrafted scarecrows.

As well as attracting people into the area, the trail was worked into the curriculum of the local academy, which had a competition in February to design the best superhero related to a topic they were studying.

Laura said: “We had so many people over the weekend which is brilliant. It’s been so lovely watching the families come out together and guessing the scarecrows.

“Lots of established villages do them, but with it being a new-build it’s a different set-up.

“The school did have theirs hanging from a roof at one point, but they had to take it down. I don’t think the caretaker was impressed with a spiderman dangling off the roof!

“There was a real mixture. Some of them you had to guess the name of them. A lot of the school’s did topic-based ones.

“Year 2 at the moment are doing Australia so they made a super kangaroo. Reception were learning about knights so they made a St George.”

There is still time for people to grab a map and take part in the trail, which ends on Saturday.

To vote for the most popular those taking part can fill out the questionnaire on the back of the trail map and post it through the red post box outside the school.

The three most popular scarecrows will be crowned at the official Superheroes Unite line-up and collect their share of the £100 prize at Tadpole Farm Academy at 3pm.

Organisers paid extra extra thanks to the school for getting involved and hosting the final ceremony.

All the funds raised will be ploughed back into the school.
