THE new overshadows the wreckage of the old on Saturday, March 26, 1977.
Our image shows the vanishing remains of the old market hall, with the recently-completed David Murray John building in the background and part of the Brunel Centre in the middle distance.
The photograph was taken in the later stages of an ambitious remodelling programme which saw the greatest changes to the local landscape in perhaps a century.
Traders moved to a section of the Brunel Centre and later to the tented market which was built in 1994 and closed in 2017.
The tented market structure currently stands empty as plans to redevelop the site are formulated.
