FRUSTRATION is growing after a planned neighbourhood park on a new housing estate was delayed again due to vandalism.

Residents of Great Western Park in Didcot have been waiting for more than a year for the park, which features skateboard ramps, a playground and sports facilities, to open.

But last weekend vandals broke in and damaged security fencing and graffitied the new equipment, with police saying this will further delay the project.

In a statement the estate's residents association said it was suspected school children were to blame.

A statement read: "The neighbourhood park, including skate park, is not currently open to the public.

"Over the past few days there has been a spate of criminal damages to the security fencing and unpleasant graffiti to the park area.

"It is suspected that school children have been involved in the damage.

"Please ensure that everyone, particularly children, are aware that the neighbourhood park area is out of bounds to members of the public."

Developer Taylor Wimpey has blamed resources and 'weather issues' for the delays and has still not confirmed an exact opening date for the facilities.

Residents have complained that the building work appeared to have been completed months ago and have seen little progress since.

In February the Oxfordshire Liberal Democrats started a petition to get the park open and blamed a lack of agreement between the Vale of White Horse District Council and the developers for the delays.

The petition, which has been signed 123 times, says: "The new Neighbourhood Park on the estate is finished but remains fenced off.

"This is because of the development agreement between the Vale of White Horse District Council and the developers.

"We call on them to work together to get the park open for local residents."

At the time Hayleigh Gascoigne, who is now the councillor for Blewbury and Harwell, said it would likely be another 12 months before the park was open to the public.

Taylor Wimpey has upped security in the area after the most recent incidents.

A spokeswoman said: “We are aware that some areas of the neighbourhood park at Great Western Park have recently been vandalised.

"We are working with Thames Valley Police to enforce measures to help to deter any future vandalism and have put additional security measures in place to monitor activity in the area.

"Works are currently underway to fix any damaged items at the park and we have instructed specialist cleaners to remove expletive graffiti from the facility.

"We are working closely with South and Vale Oxfordshire District Council and local organisations to open the neighbourhood park to the public as soon as practicably possible."

Several new facilities, including a health centre, community centres and several schools have been built to service the estate which will eventually hold 3,300 homes.
