A GROUP leader who has supported the Scouts and Cubs in Royal Wootton Bassett for almost half a century is retiring later this week.

Eileen Lambourne joined the 1st Wootton Bassett Cubs when her son was eight and the cub leader asked if she would like to help out as an assistant leader.

She later became cub leader for 22 years before leading the scouts for 25 years, and will now step down to return to being assistant leader.

The 72-year-old said: "I don't regret a minute of it and I will be sad to leave, though it feels like coming full-circle. This has been a big part of my life so I couldn't step away from the scouts entirely, I'd be bored.

"I've enjoyed it so much and have wonderful memories of being part of the town carnival and our trips away.

"Just seeing the kids enjoy themselves and achieve their potential is the best part, it gives them more awareness of their self-worth and how to be part of a team.

"I've learned so many good values and skills from being involved in these groups.

"My husband Terry was the treasurer and property manager - without his support, I would not be able to have done this for so long."

Anyone who has been involved in scouting during Eileen's tenure can come along to a special event at the Rugby Club on Ballards Ash from 7.30pm to 9.30pm on Thursday.

After a short annual general meeting, members will reminisce about Eileen's time with the groups.

Eileen added: "It will be very emotional but it's time for young people to take it on because they have lots more to give and more new ideas. They can take the scouting movement into the future.

"If you are thinking about doing it, just do it, the more people we have involved in scouting the better
