SWINDON town centre’s 'front door' is officially open following a £800,000 revamp.

An project by Swindon Borough Council to improve Wellington Street, one of the first things visitors see coming out of the railway station, is now completed. The street is open to all, although workers are still there making finishing touches.

A new zebra crossing has been installed as well as a new toucan crossing on Milford Street. New paving has also been laid on the footpaths and sharper markings have been drawn on the roads, as well as new paving and a protected bike lane.

Councillor Maureen Penny, the cabinet member for highways and the environment, said: “I am pleased to declare Wellington Street officially open following the regeneration work that has taken place.

“The area around the railway station now feels much more welcoming and the transformation should make people feel extremely proud of their town.

“I would like to thank commuters for bearing with us while the work has gone ahead. Improvements like this will contribute towards Swindon being recognised as a desirable place in which to live, work, invest and do business.”

The £851,000 scheme has being funded by a grant received by the council from the National Productivity Investment Fund.

That was being supplemented by contributions made to the council by property developers on various developments in the town centre – known as Section 106 contributions, and Local Transport Plan funding.
