The owner and licence holder of a town centre drinks store will find out the fate of his business today.

Members of Swindon Borough Council’s licensing panel will meet to to consider a review of the licence at Victoria off licence at 184 Victoria Road, near Regent Circus.

The case has been brought by Wiltshire Police after two of its officers discovered a cache of what they believed were illicit cigarettes and tobacco – either imported into he UK with tax not having been paid, or counterfeit.

The officers, one constable and the Swindon licensing officer, visited the shop to see if CCTV would show it selling alcohol to a known street drinker.

When looking around they found a bag with the cigarettes in, which the shop assistant said was hers, but she later admitted she had been told by the owner to lie to the officers.

The licensing panel meets today at 1pm.
