THE one-hundredth anniversary of the granting of Burnley's Charter prompted many celebratory events in the town, but the jewel in the crown was undoubtedly the Centenary Carnival.
June 24 1961 was the date of the grand event, which began with a three and a half mile long procession through the town. The procession through the town.
The procession was led by the Band and Drums of the Lancashire Regiment.
The route took participants from the Park Lane area to the Casterton Avenue junction of Colne Road.
At exactly 1.30pm the police outriders slipped their bikes into gear, and the procession moved off.
The marshal responsible for the smooth running of this part of the event was Mr Herbert Wilkinson who, together with his small team of assistants received widespread acclaim for the meticulous way the procession was organised and executed.
One hundred police officers were on duty.
There were milk floats from local firms, the fire brigades, scouts and guides and others.
