MOST people turning 30 might mark the occasion with a party.

But David Gretton is doing things a little differently.

The Park South man has set himself the 30 before 30 challenge in aid of the mental health charity Mind.

For this, the customer service assistant has to complete 30 activities set by pals before he turns 30 in December next year.

“I know some people think it’s a crazy idea, but I’ve enjoyed it so far,” he said.

The daredevil hopes to raise £1,000 for the charity.

“A lot of people go for runs, or climb mountains, but that’s only ever doing one thing. I thought it would be more fun to do more than one activity, and then I could keep it going for longer.

“And the longer I keep this going, the more awareness I can raise of the issue,” he said.

David has already had his legs waxed for the cause.

“That was so painful, specifically the knees.

"I was just going to do one leg, but I did both in the end. As we were having some hot weather coming up I thought it would look a bit strange with only one done,” he said.

His second challenge was a general knowledge quiz where every time he got a question wrong something was thrown over him.

The Bubble Rush 2019 was his third challenge, consisting of a 5k run in Lydiard Park starting in a sea of bubbles with four bubble canons along the route pumping out coloured foam.

His fourth challenge saw him abseil off Jury’s Inn on Fleming Way.

“That was terrifying, because I’m petrified of heights. It takes about one minute to get down.

"I just thought of all the nice things that I was going to be doing and that nothing was going to go wrong.”

The different challenges are chosen to overcome David’s fears and make people laugh. Future ideas include holding a tarantula, a skydive and eating a creepy-crawly salad.

“The challenges will be anything and everything that I’m not afraid to do, even though some I am afraid to do,” he said.

David chose Mind as his charity because of his own experiences.

He said: “I’ve been suffering with mental health myself a bit in the past.

“It just came to my attention that not many people are aware of it much.

“Dealing with it first hand, I know how difficult it can be to talk about it.

“I just want to help break the taboo around mental health and help people know you should talk about stuff,” he added.

Mind is a UK charity that provides advice and support to anyone experiencing mental health problems.
