Nando's at the Orbital Shopping Centre has had its application to change the front of its branch approved. The company wanted to make the change because it says customers sometimes can’t find the front door.

The application to Swindon Borough Council says: “The proposed signage will help customers and passers-by to distinguish the existing entranceway to the restaurant, which has often been mistaken for the service door located on the same elevation of the building due to the lack of signage.

“The signage will ensure that an active frontage is maintained, which contributes to the overall vitality and attractiveness of the area, whilst advertising Nando’s presence.”

Retail parks

Furniture store Dunelm will be allowed to put up huge signs on the front of its building in St Margaret’s Retail Park in Oxford Road, Stratton St Margaret. The store will be allowed to advertise its made-to-measure service for furniture and its in-store Pausa cafe.

At the Bridgemead Industrial estate in Ashworth Road, charity Sue Ryder is preparing to move into a new unit. It has applied to be allowed to put up its signs on the front of Unit 3a, which has been vacated by previous tenant American Golf Store.

The company will also put up sings on the parks ‘totem’ signs at the road access if approved.

Go Outdoors could play host to two rapid electric vehicle charging points at its store in Ocotal Way retail park. Basingstoke-based Instavolt has applied to install the points in the corner of the unit’s parking by Colbourne Street.

Highworth

Arkell’s Brewery’s plans to convert the old Fox Pub in Swindon Road in Highworth into five flats and build two semi-detached houses in the space next door have been approved. The company was given permission earlier this year but amended its plans, which have been given the go ahead.

The only concerns about the scheme was access to the road and busy roundabout.

The first communications tower capable of providing 5G mobile telephone and internet signals to the town has been approved.

MBNL Ltd, which provides infrastructure management for comms providers 3 and EE has had its application to replace an existing tower near the Fish Bros car showroom in Penzance Drive with an upgrade.

One of the major differences is that it will be much bigger – 10m – and covered in more dishes and antennae.

The new tower will be 25m – about the same height as an eight-storey building.

The advantages of 5G signals is that it allows much faster transmission and downloading of data than existing networks. The data load means signal doesn’t travel as far, meaning more towers are necessary for coverage.
