ROYAL Wootton Bassett's Mayor Steve Watts will tackle the town's own version of the Hell Hound Challenge, chomping his way through one of the world's hottest Scotch eggs on Saturday.

The Scotch egg he will tackle contains chillies registering over 16million on the Scoville scale.

Chef Dan Howe, who makes the Hell Hounds at Dan’s Deli further down the High Street, reckons he needs gloves to avoid blisters as he prepares this startlingly hot Scotch egg.

Also taking up the gauntlet in aid of the charity are Deputy Mayor Nic Hughes, and fellow councillor Steve Bucknell.

The challenge at 11am at the Cross Keys pub on the High Street, comes before the pub hosts the Mayor's garden party from 12 noon, which will feature five bands and a dance troupe.

The challenge underlines the Mayor's commitment to support local young people, as he will be raising money for the Richard Jones Foundation, which offers grants to 7-25-year olds in Royal Wootton Bassett in order to help them achieve their full potential.

Cross Keys manager, Ross Floyd is keen to support the Richard Jones Foundation, because of grants from a similar children's charity that enabled him to attend university.

Saturday's free event evolved after a conversation between Ross and the local Knitters Group who meet on the premises.

5p will be donated to the Richard Jones Foundation for every bottle of Amstel sold at the Cross Keys during the event, and supporters can follow Facebook @thecrosskeyswoottonbasett.

Coun Watts will welcome support from the public, in donations via the just giving page: www.justgiving.com/richardjonesfoundation
