EXCALIBUR exclusively partnered with City Fibre to bring lightning-fast broadband speeds to Swindon.

The company will install pure fibre cables in a new underground network independent of BT and Openreach that will replace the current system which has fibre lines connected to boxes at the end of Swindon streets and slow copper cables to connect these boxes to different premises.

A rollout to businesses has already begun and could be extended if there’s enough interest, then the project will link up to residential areas for its second phase in YEAR before integrating council-run facilities in its third to make Swindon a ‘Smart City’.

Speeds of more than 900mbps – a significant step up from current speeds of around 40mbps – can download a 4k Ultra-HD movie in seven seconds.

Craig Miley from Excalibur said: “It’s an amazing and revolutionary upgrade. With so much development going on in Swindon, this will really help, it’s come at the perfect time. Currently, businesses can only get speeds this high by paying thousands of pounds for dedicated access but this network will allow everyone to have them at a more affordable rate.

“This could attract lots of new businesses to Swindon while helping the ones that are already here immensely by improving their output to customers and giving them an edge over the competition in other towns. People came up to us at the expo expressing interest in setting up offices in buildings that are on the new network so it was been great to let so many people know about it.”

“After helping businesses and residents, it could help hospitals and things like traffic light systems. Everything is online these days, like accounting systems and cloud backups, so slow speeds affect productivity and cost so. The new network will make a big difference because things people rely on daily will work faster.”
