POLICE are at the scene of a serious assault in Old Town investigating the stabbing of two men.

Spatters of blood can be seen on the pavement on Victoria Road, from King John Street to Union Row.

Officers were called by the ambulance service shortly after midnight when two men arrived separately at Great Western Hospital with stab wounds.

One victim, a Swindon man in his 30s, suffered three stab or slash wounds to his head and body while the other, a Swindon man in his 20s, suffered a single stab wound to the shoulder.

None of the injuries were life threatening.

Police believe the two men could have been inured during the same assault at this early stage in their enquiries.

Officers cordoned off an area in Victoria Road as part of their investigation.

The road was shut for several hours overnight and officers remain at the scene this morning. The road has been reopened in both directions.

Det Insp Helen Jacobs, from Swindon CID, said: “We know this incident will cause understandable concern amongst local people and I want to reassure you that we doing everything we can to find the person or people responsible.

“Although our enquiries are at a very early stage, we do not believe either of these men were injured in a random attack, and there is nothing to suggest there was any risk to the wider public.

“There is likely to be a police presence in the Victoria Road area throughout today and we would urge anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious last night or who knows anything about what happened, to come forward and speak to us.”
