ADVER stories this week in 1980 included one about Swindon man Nigel Edginton, who won the chance to take part in a perilous jump from a great height with vines attached to his ankles.

The vodka company behind the competition eventually vetoed the idea amid insurance concerns, and Nigel settled for camel racing in America.

Other news included the growing scourge of junk mail, a man who grafted part of a Morris Minor to the back of a Jaguar sports car so he could carry his labradors, and a superstar opening a traditional summer fete.
