THE Adver caught up with Andy Marcer at the Beehive pub to find out about running a pub long-term.

Andy has been at the help of the Regent Circus establishment for 27 years.

“We’ve probably got more than 100 regulars, obviously that’s not every day but you’d probably see them once a week or more," said Andy.

“This pub has always had a really great atmosphere, back when I started using it in 1975, when the college was still open at the bottom of the hill.

“It was very much a student pub, but it’s always been very mixed. Back then you’d have solicitors coming in, students, bikers, a real sort of good mix of people and everyone gets on, I think that’s one of the key things.

“One of the best things about running the pub is that you never quite know what will happen day by day.

“But the worst thing, well, it’s not so much of an ongoing issue but the worst thing was the three or four years after the recession started biting.

“The college closed, and the building was starting to fall apart and there were a few grim years there where we were hanging on by our fingernails.

“I think, when it comes to the pub, the most important thing is that you can still walk in here and getting the really nice feeling about the place, it’s all about preserving that.

“We hardly see any trouble in here, it’s not the kind of place where you might feel on edge or be worrying about who could be standing over your shoulder.”
