A PENSIONER denies possession of indecent images of children and chatting online with an undercover police officer posing as a child.

John Butters, 71, of St Albans Close, Rodbourne, appeared before Swindon Crown Court yesterday morning dressed in dark trousers and a smart white shirt.

Speaking only to confirm his name and pleas, Butters admitted a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm but denied attempting to make sexual communication with a child, and three counts of possession of indecent images of a child – including 26 in the worst category.

The sexual offence accusations were allegedly committed in a period between February and November 2017.

The assault charge relates to a date on September 6, 2018.

Judge Peter Crabtree OBE released Butters on unconditional bail for the trial on November 18. The trial is expected to last between two and three days.
