Swindon Wheelers are a club with loads of energy.

They have been going since 1923, and now boast 230 members.

"We've just been growing year on year, and do a lot of stuff now that we never used to so in the past," said Howard King, chairman of the club.

Every weekend the Swindon Wheelers host roughly ten different rides for groups of members. These involve riding out into Wiltshire and the surrounding countryside, stopping at various favourite cafes along the way.

"Each ride is roughly 50 miles long, and some of our faster riders often do quite a lot more than that," added Mr King.

"We also do midweek rides in the summer for those who want to, so members can get to ride a lot if they want to," he said.

Members are split into four different groups depending on their ability, so that everyone from beginners to the most experienced can be supported.

"Our demographic is across the board," added Mr King.

"We do not have riders under 16, and generally most of us are over 40 from all walks of life.

"Members include taxi drivers, lorry drivers, business owners, professional business people, ex-military and even policemen and women.

"They use cycling to improve their fitness and work out the stress of the week," added Mr King.

Over the club's history, some impressive cyclists have been among the ranks, including a cyclist called Den White.

In the 1958 National Championships he made the 24 hour distance record, cycling a total of 486.75 miles.

Theses days the Swindon Wheelers still take part in many competitive events which include time trials, sportives, audax rides and cyclocross events.

However, members do not have to compete and the club also encourages people to simply have fun on their bikes and set their own goals.

"We are the friendly local club for riders who want to improve their cycling," said Mr King.

Annual membership is £15, which includes discounts at local cycling shops and and array of benefits including club kit offers, access to cycling tours overseas and local social events.
