WILTSHIRE Police bosses paid tribute to a policeman killed while responding to reports of a burglary.

Thames Valley Police arrested 10 men aged from 13 to 30 as part of an ongoing investigation into the murder of PC Andrew Harper in Berkshire.

The officer attended a reported burglary at 11.30pm on Thursday near the A4 between Reading and Newbury before being killed while performing his duties.

Angus Macpherson said: "Devastating news from Thames Valley Police.

"My thoughts are with PC Harper's family and friends, colleagues and the wider policing family at this incredibly difficult time."

Chief constable Keir Pritchard said: "The support and condolences of all of us at Wiltshire Police are with you all.

"We can support you in any way that’s required. My thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this tragic time.

Those arrested are still in custody at police stations around the Thames Valley while forensic teams investigate the scene of the incident.
