Staff from RWE npower in Swindon have helped raise £15million for Macmillan Cancer Support during the company's 15 year charity partnership.

Bradley Faulks and John Patterson joined staff from the rest of npower to complete an epic cross country trek, cycling, hiking and paddling over 100km.

Starting at Newcastle and finishing in Carlisle the pair travelled along Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland.

Bradley Faulks who works in the real estate team based at Windmill Hill business park, said: “From the get-go it was tough. The hardest thing was the steep inclines and sheer drops on the hikes.”

The duo raised over £1k through the two day challenge, which marked a decade and a half of supporting the cancer charity.

The first 40km to Chollerford on day one were cycled, followed by an 18km trek.

Bradley added: "By the end of the first day, I could barely put one foot in front of the other. When I woke the next morning I was really sore – I couldn’t believe we had more to hike, another cycle plus a paddle to finish it all off!”

Day two continued with a further 12km trek along the 1,892-year-old wall to reach the highest point on the journey, Whinshields Crags.

After an additional 30km cycle to Low Crosby, the team crossed the finish line paddling into Carlisle along the River Eden.

“Despite all the pain, it was humbling to know that we were doing this for a great cause and we’re all so proud of our partnership with Macmillan and what we’ve all achieved together during the past 15 years,” said Bradley.

Overall, staff raised £14,000 for this challenge, which npower have matched pound for pound, taking the total to £28,000.

Heather Tyrer, community manager at npower said, “Macmillan means a lot to the people of npower, and the fact that we’ve already hit this incredible amount for this fantastic charity is testament to that.”

Catriona Munn, senior partnership manager at the charity added: “Reaching 15 years for any charity partnership is fantastic and we are so grateful to all the enthusiastic npower employees who hike, run, bake and row for Macmillan year after year.

“The number of people living with cancer in the UK is rising and so we greatly appreciate the continued dedication of employees at npower. The money raised will allow Macmillan to be right there for people living with cancer and continue providing vital practical, emotional and financial support,” she added.
