One of the ward councillors for Eastcott – the area covering Regent Circus – has vowed to try and keep the Morrisons store open.
Stan Pajak will organise a petition showing the strength of feeling in the area.
The Lib Dem councillor said: “This is both a shock and devastating news for the town centre community and the viability of the shopping offer of Swindon’s town centre
“This is a commercial decision by Morrisons and all we can do is implore them to reconsider.
“However I will organise a petition to the company.
Coun Pajak said he was a customer himself at the store and added: “Morrisons Regent Circus is a wonderful example of a company that gets involved in its community. It has supported every large event we hold at Queen’s Parkwith wonderful raffle prizes.
“Similarly it is a major employer of local residents.”
