TWO shop owners in Swindon have opposing views on how a no-deal Brexit would impact on them.

The boss of Magnum Wines in Old Town is optimistic that 'trade would find a way'.

But the owner of a Highworth deli fears supplies would be hit and prices increase.

Brian Saunders, owner of the Magnum Wine Shop in Wood Street said: “I have every confidence in a no-deal Brexit.

“Trade always finds a way. The English market is a very important one to the Spanish and Italians. We import a lot of wines from them.

“Britain is a massive market for those imports.

“Most of our stock here is 90 per cent imported. But it’s a very sophisticated system, it will all work out fine.”

But Tim Belcher, co-owner of Bloomfields Fine Food in Highworth, wasn’t so sure about how a no-deal would work out.

He said: “The short answer, of course, is we don’t know how a no-deal Brexit will affect us or the weekly shop. No-one seems to know.

“Certain cheeses we use and sell in our delis such as mozzarella, halloumi and feta are imported from Europe, as are many other foods such as tomatoes, olives and avocados.

“Any increase on import tariffs and documentation could lead to increased prices, and border checks could lead to delays.

“We sell a lot of local products, such as cheese, bread, milk, biscuits, beets and make our own homemade products so our shelves will never be bare.

“However, the uncertainty regarding imports and exports is a worry, particularly for food producers everywhere.”

The Adver asked our readers what their top five items were in their weekly shop. Answers included cheese, tomatoes, potatoes, beer and mushrooms.

All of the items suggested are imported from Europe, particularly cheese, which the UK importing over £2 billion annually.

And in terms of exports, 98 per cent of British lamb is exported to the EU.

Without a trade deal, this export would be hit with a 40 per cent tariff.

A report from researchers at the University of Sussex suggested earlier this year that the cost of food will rise by seven per cent next year in the event of a no-deal scenario.
